Hong Kong Food Trail (Aug '08)

The main reason was to give myself a break between the two overseas business trips in Aug. At the same I could also use up most of my krisflyer mileage which will expire soon.

Airport Tax: Total SGD 111
Accommodation: Dorsett Seaview Hotel (2 nights)
Currency exchange rate: HKD 100 = SGD 17.70 (Aug '08 period)

Day One

My food trail began on 11 Aug when I was having my breakfast at 0700 hrs. This Toast Box outlet is located inside the transit area of Changi Airport Terminal 3. The toast set I've ordered consists of two 'miserable' pieces of kaya & butter toast bread, a cup of hot tea and two half-boiled eggs. Cost for this set was SGD 4.20.

Had my second breakfast of 'Nasi Lemak' at around 0945 hrs on flight SQ 860.

After hotel check-in, went to Mido Café (美都餐室) just beside the hotel for my late lunch at 1430 hrs. Ordered a cup of milk tea and crispy noodles with beef cubes. Although slightly pricey (total about HKD 40) compared to elsewhere, the food actually taste good; no wonder this cafe can survive for 50-years! Because of its interior furnishing remains unchanged for 50-years, this place has been used as a filming location for many television / movie production.

The address of Mido Café is No. 63 Temple Street, Kowloon.

Day Two

On my 2nd Day (12 Aug), went to Sweet Dynasty (糖朝) for late breakfast at 0950 hrs. Ordered my favorite fried carrot cake, a bowl of wanton noodles and mango bean curd for dessert. Fried carrot-cake is a must try as it has generous portion of succulent prawns. Other not-to-be-missed is the 'mango tofu (bean curd)', which has an impressive presentation of dry-ice emerging from the side of the bowl. Total cost was about HKD 80. Interesting to note that Hong Kong version has no 'char siew' in their wanton noodles. Also someone mentioned to me that Hong Kong noodles have this slight bitter taste, but to me I actually can accept the taste.

This restuarant is located at Ground Floor, 100 Canton Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui.

After long walking along Nathan Road, I had mango dessert in the afternoon at Hoi Lau San (许留山). Ordered this 'Black glutinous rice with coconut milk and mango' (多芒椰汁黑糯米) at HKD 28. Maybe it's seasonal, the mango fruit wasn't that sweet during this period.

Had my dessert at one of the outlets located opposite my hotel, Ground Floor, 263 Shanghai Street, Kowloon.

Supper was a stick of beef-balls and Oyster omelette. Don't be confused that it is a local Hong Kong snack, it just happened that there was a stall near my hotel that sells Teochew style Oyster omelette. This kind of Oyster omelette can also be found in Singapore.

Day Three

On my last day (13 Aug), I had breakfast at Ocean Empire (海皇粥店), just 5-mins walk from my hotel. Ordered a preserved egg porridge, rice-sheet (chee cheong fun) wrapped in doughnut and soya bean milk. Simply like those Cantonese-style of porridge where the rice is cooked until paste-like.

Location of this oulet is Lai Shing Building, 497A Nathan Road, Kowloon.

Lunch was taken at a food court inside the Citygate mall. Had a cup of iced lemon-tea and Taiwanese-style beef noodles. Average in taste for the noodles, but liked the quenching ice-lemon tea.

Dinner was two-piece meal at Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits, located inside the transit area of HK airport Terminal 1. Another outlet of this restaurant is located at the departure hall (outside transit area) of the same terminal. Initially wanted to have dinner on flight but the smell of the fried chicken simply can't resist; or maybe I'm just too hungry. Cost of this combo meal was HKD 52.

Had my late dinner (or shall I call it supper?) at 2100 hrs on flight SQ 873 back to Singapore. With this, I ended my 3-day food trail in Hong Kong.
